In addition to belonging to a research community with similar interests, benefits of SSHB membership include receiving the Annals at a much-reduced rate (including online access) and reduced registration fees at the Society's Symposia.

How to apply for membership

Membership of the Society is open to those who work or have worked in the field of human biology, as defined on the home page. Membership is by election. Applicants are nominated by two Ordinary Members using the form that can be downloaded below or appearing in the Annals. If it is not possible to find two existing members to nominate you, please attach a CV to your application. Applications are scrutinised by the Committee. Recommendations are made to the membership at the AGM for approval.

Please contact the SSHB Secretary for further information about joining the SSHB.

Membership subscriptions

Subscriptions are due on 1st January each year. Subscriptions for 2009 are UK£42 per annum for ordinary members (please note price increase) and UK£1 per annum for retired members (please note that this this does not include a subscription to the Annals but does normally entitle the retired member to reduced rate admission to SSHB meetings). Students (those following courses leading to diplomas or degrees and graduates registered for higher degrees) pay a single subscription of £5 on joining the SSHB, which also normally entitles the member to reduced rate admission to meetings. If students and retired members wish to receive the Annals, they have the option of paying a special reduced rate of 60% of the ordinary member subscription per annum.

Members should send subscriptions to the SSHB Treasurer. Payment should be in pounds sterling or the equivalent after bank charges. Payment may be made by Standing Order on a UK bank. The Society strongly encourages members to pay their subscriptions at the beginning of each calendar year.  Unfortunately, the SSHB is unable to receive payments made by direct debit and can only accept credit card payments under exceptional circumstances; please contact the Treasurer for further information. Late payment may result in a delay in receiving the Annals of Human Biology.

North American members should send an annual subscription of US$70 as a dollar check to the SSHB North America Secretary/Treasurer, made payable to the Society for the Study of Human Biology.

List of members and email list

The SSHB membership list is published from time-to-time in the Annals. The paid up membership of the SSHB will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Annals. The membership list can also be downloaded here.

The SSHB has a mailing list for members. Notices of upcoming meetings of interest to members, details of job vacancies and studentships, grants, bursaries and so on can be posted on the list. Send mail for the list to sshb-members@jiscmail.ac.uk. You need to be a list member to post to the list. To join the list, go to the SSHB-members list JISCMAIL page.
